A poem for you all. I wrote this many years ago… found it more recently and it seems approximate to share it with you today.
Rainbow Bridge
Little bundle of fun, my dear old friend,
one day we’ll walk together at my journey’s end.
You’ll come running to me, the way you always came
that same joyful bounding, still knowing my name.
Only a thin veil stands between us now,
a small and tender distance, though I don’t know how.
I loved you, and I know that you loved me the same,
and I take comfort knowing you are free of pain.
Free to run again with limbs light and strong,
free to fly, if flying was where your spirit belonged.
I’ve asked my family gently to keep you near,
to speak your name often, so you still feel here.
How I miss those big brown eyes, watching, waiting, true.
More than anything I’ve wished, I wish to walk with you
one more ordinary walk, side by side, unhurried,
the kind we never knew, back then, was numbered.
This is my greatest hope for the day my new life starts:
that all I’ve loved will gather, undivided hearts,
family and friends around me when the toasting’s done,
and there, among them, waiting you, my faithful one.
It will be you and me again, my old dear friend,
walking into that gentle land where all partings end.
Our greater adventure calling, just up ahead,
forever at my side now, nothing left unsaid.
